TechRadar is part of Future US Inc, an international media group and leading digital publisher. Our unit was manufactured in February 2020; you can see the label here. We don't expect VA panels to experience permanent image retention, as the VA panel in our long-term test appears immune. The stand supports the TV well, though there's still a bit of wobble. When in 'Game' mode, the LED Motion Clarity setting didn't seem to do anything, which is supposed to enable the 60Hz Black Frame Insertion feature. 4K/HDR films and TV series don’t really dazzle you the same way they would on another TV - especially if you’re sitting in a bright room. The EOTF follows the target curve very well until it rolls off at its peak brightness. It remains consistently bright for the most part, but small areas are noticeably dimmer due to the aggressive frame dimming. These were minor problems, ultimately, and didn’t detract too much from the overall experience. Set HDMI eARC to 'Auto' and Digital Output Audio to 'Auto' or 'Passthrough'. There you’ll find four HDMI ports (all of which are HDMI 2.0, and HDMI 4 has ARC), plus two USB ports and one digital audio out port. Note that some tests such as the gray uniformity may vary between individual units. Speaking of things that would be nice to have, as you might’ve noticed the Samsung Q60R doesn’t use Samsung’s OneConnect Box that does a better job of hiding cables. Update 09/15/2020: We've updated the TV to the newest firmware (1301) and retested Netflix. The back of the TV is made of plastic and has an etched horizontal dotted pattern. While most of the new features are great - especially the Apple TV integration and Ambient Mode that helps the TV blend in to the wall when it’s in standby mode - we did have problems getting Bixby to recognize certain movie names (‘Thor’ was repeatedly mistaken for the word ‘Four’, for example) and Netflix occasionally encountered an error that required us to restart the app. The TCL has a full-array local dimming feature, it displays a wider color gamut, it has better gradient handling, and quicker response time. It's well-suited for dark room viewing thanks to its outstanding native contrast ratio and remarkable black uniformity. The slimness of the TV is due to the TV using an edge-lit design instead of full-array lighting. It's a good entry-level TV if you still want to have a decent HDR experience, but there are better options available for cheaper, such as the Hisense H8G. Sadly, it has a slow response time that results in motion blur, but there's a Black Frame Insertion feature to improve the appearance of motion. Include details of your hands-on experience with the product. The borders are very thin and aren't distracting. © The TCL 5 Series/S535 2020 is much better than the Samsung Q60T QLED. It feels well-built and there are no obvious gaps in the construction. However, the TU7000 has faster response time, and its superior gradient handling results in less banding. The Samsung Q60/Q60R are the company’s 2019 entry-level QLED TVs. The way this TV is setup you’ll need to run cables directly into the back of the screen, and that can create a kind of chaotic mess if you’re not careful. HD/SDR Performance: With a great upscaling engine and just enough brightness, the Q60R is a good-but-not-incredible HD/SDR screen. Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2019. The Samsung Q60T is decent for watching sports. Where we were a little more disappointed was with the TV’s 4K/HDR performance that really lacked in comparison to what we’ve seen on Samsung’s higher-end QLED TVs. To be more specific, the Samsung Q60R uses the company’s Quantum Processor 4K that uses AI algorithms to fill in the details when upscaling from HD to 4K. In practice that means it’s not quite QLED in the same vein as the bright, colorful, extravagant panels we see elsewhere in the line-up that can make HDR content really shine. Stack this side-by-side against the Vizio P-Series Quantum from last year or the Sony X950G that just came out a few months ago, and the Q60R looks positively dull by comparison. The Samsung Q70/Q70R QLED is a better TV than the Samsung Q60T QLED. Design TL;DR: Despite using plastic for most of the TV’s design, the Samsung Q60R is a good-looking TV that’s relatively slim thanks to its edge-lit LED panel. Throughout our testing period we watched a number of HD/SDR films and TV shows including Baby Driver and seasons one and two of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. White balance is virtually perfect and gamma follows the curve well, so most scenes appear at the correct brightness. It also has better gray uniformity, much more accurate colors out-of-the-box, and better gradient performance. Although the Q60T has some improvements in terms of performance, some features that were on the Q60R have been removed, such as 24p judder reduction and variable refresh rate. It now lowers the backlight flickering frequency to 60Hz when in 'Game' mode. Thankfully, the good news for folks who want that extra oomph in terms of audio is that the TV has built-in Bluetooth, Optical Audio Out and HDMI ARC - all of which are ways to get sound from the TV to any kind of speaker you may have laying around. The build quality is decent. All it needs is a good image upscaler - and that, the Q60R definitely has. It upscales lower-resolution content well, such as from Blu-ray players, and it removes judder from native 24p sources. The LG NANO85 is a bit better than the Samsung Q60T QLED, but their differences come down to their different panels.
